Bariatric Patients and Staff Participate In Inaugural Carmel Marathon

At the St.Vincent Bariatric Center of Excellence, we’re in the business of changing lives. Nothing gives us a greater sense of pride than seeing our patients in action–literally.

Earlier this summer, thirty representatives of the St.Vincent Bariatric Center of Excellence participated in the inaugural Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend. These current and former patients, some of whom struggled to climb a flight of stairs only a year ago, walked and ran in the half marathon, 8k, and 1 mile events. And all in the heat of summer! For many of our patients this was their first organized race. We were incredibly proud to see how far they’ve come – but not as proud as they were!

Brenda Vann, who had bariatric surgery in 2009 and has lost over 150 pounds, said, “This is an accomplishment I could have never fathomed.  Prior to surgery my life had become so sedentary, but now I feel younger than I did 10 years ago.”  Her only regret?  “I wish I would have done this 20 years ago.”

Many of our L.I.F.E. for Kids families participated in the event as well. We were encouraged to see children as young as eight years old walking with their parents and siblings, taking important foundational steps toward healthier, more active lifestyles.

Congratulations to all of our surgical and nonsurgical patients.  We look forward to doing this again next year!

I had my surgery November 2011 and ran the 5K last year with my 10 year old daughter. This was my first 5K event which was very exciting and fun! Since my surgery I have lost 80 pounds. I plan on running this event every year
