Keeping Hydrated After Bariatric Surgery

It is important to stay hydrated after bariatric surgery. Nearly all of the major systems in the body depend on water in order to function properly. This means it’s essential for you to drink fluids continually throughout the day after surgery in order to achieve the optimal intake. Be sure to avoid drinking with meals, waiting at least 30 minutes after meals to drink again. This will allow food from being flushed through the stomach too quickly. You should be able to drink about 8 oz in about 30-45 minutes.

We normally recommend 64-80 oz of fluids daily, but with the level of intense heat we have had this summer it’s important to drink more fluids even than usual. The body perspires more in heat in an effort to cool itself down. More fluid is needed to replace this extra loss of water. Be aware of the signs of dehydration – headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, and infrequent urination. Always stick to non-carbonated, non-caffeinated sugar free fluids such as water, crystal light, mio, or another similar sugar free beverages. If you exercise outside in the heat, it’s a good idea to bring along a drink with electrolytes, such as Powerade Zero or Gatorade G2.
